11/15/2008 5:58 PM Alert

hello everyone,

I have recently discovered SMA, and am hopeful about the program. I have been in another 12-step group for a year and a half to amazing results, but have not tried to apply the 12-step model to my self-harm addiction.

There are no SMA meetings in my area, so I am planning on attending online meetings, emailing with folks, etc. I would like to get a sponsor to help me work this program, whether via IM, email, or phone--any one-on-one support with someone who's been around the SMA program for a while would be helpful. I have a sponsor in my other program and I value our relationship greatly.

If you know where I can troll one out, or if you or someone you know is available for sponsorship, please contact me, or reply to my post.

Thank you,

Dresden

hi Dresden,

i am replying to this post really late, but figured it could not hurt so: i am a self-mutilator. a couple of months ago i went to a local AA meeting to find a sponsor for SMA specifically. your sponsor for SMA does not have to be a self-mutilator as well, while it could be helpful. i am working the steps the same as one in AA, NA, CMA, CA, etc. would; replacing self-mutilation for alcohol where necessary in the Big Book. my sponsor is not a self-mutilator and while she has a little trouble understanding certain things about my addiction, she has never scoffed or thought less of me. so maybe see if your current sponsor could go through the steps with you applying it to self-mutilation. hope that helped.

hi dresden. glad to see you found the forums. there may nto be SMA meetings where you are, but get in touch with your local clinic/health place, and see if there are any suport groups where you can share. (self disclosure)

you will probably find that alot more peopel than you thought have experiance in SI that will also be in AA/NA that will be more than willing to help you. if your AA sponsor knows about your SI you should probaly be including it in the step work. the steps are recovery from our lived not our primary addiction. try asking your AA sponsor or see if anyone else in a fellowship could help you.

every group has to start somewhere though, i meen, who where bill and bobs sponsors? you could start up your own SMA meeting in your town.

i hope tsumi shakumi and i helped. see you in the meeting.. it is 2 hours later now,, we had a time change.

I just wanted to thank you all for your posts. I'm a long timer in AA and have a daughter in her first 30 days since her last SM relapse. Your simple information helped me to do some research for support for her. She's been coming to AA meetings with me per the advice of the rehab she was in recently. This post was affirmation and also enabled me to gather information on meetings, the main SMA site so may be when she's on her feet, etc she can start meetings in this area. There are so many who need to hear your experience, strength and hope. I've directed her to this site also. Thank you again!! Beth G. Colorado Springs, CO
