05/17/2009 10:46 PM Alert

My name is Cathy and I am an alcoholic and addict. I got clean and sober in Lafayette, IN 15 years ago. AA and NA saved my life!

I am completing a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Purdue University. I chose a topic I am passionate about for my dissertation research – the 12-step approach to recovery. My research is aimed improving knowledge and understanding of the 12-step approach withy my primary goal being to educate mental health practitioners (e.g, counselors, psychologists) about the 12-step approach and its effectiveness.  From the viewpoint of someone in the mental health field, I have found that many practitioners have limited knowledge and understanding of 12-step recovery. It has been found that increased knowledge/understanding is associated with increased promotion of 12-step programs for clients with substance abuse problems. In addition, it is my hope that increased knowledge of the 12-step approach will encourage mental health practitioners to utilize 12-step concepts and principles in their practice with recovering substance abusers.

You can help by completing the survey at the link below. The survey takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, you will have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to either Target or Wal-Mart.  Also, please feel free to send on to others who may be interested.

For anyone feeling offended that I am using this site for research purposes I offer my sincerest of apologies. It is not my intent to exploit or in any way show disrespect toward Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. I love AA and NA and I can honestly say that I would not be here (let alone getting a Ph.D.) if not for both programs. My intent is to increase utilization of 12-step programs by facilitating increased promotion and use of the 12-step approach among mental health practitioners who work alcoholics and drug addicts.
