01/31/2008 6:18 PM Alert

I flushed 2 cartons of ciggs and I had ALMOST 48 hours without a cigarette before running to the store today and buying some. I was told by my doctor that if I didn't make some major changes that he doubts I live to be 40 years old. He has been telling me my lungs were bad for a long time now, but getting high and drunk I really didnt care. I care now tho and I am calling him back tomorrow and seeing if there is anything new out that I can take to help me stop but everything in the past he has always said no to it because of other health reasons and risks. But doing it cold turkey going from almost 3 packs a day to none, Its just to hard. Its alot harder than I thought it would be and I felt sick all night and day and headachs really bad, cravings and irritable, thoughts of using even poped up. Talk about insanity, not smoking so I can prove the doctor wrong and LIVE and there I am thinking about using. *rollseyes* Tried my hardest to distract myself to not give in, but couldnt take it no more and went and bought a carton of ciggs. My cat is even grateful I went and got cigarettes, lol. People say not to stop in the first year of geting clean and sober, but when your doctor tells ya do or else.... doesnt leave many options. I just dont know how to do it along with everythng else tho and now disappointed in myself for giving in.

First hon.... a       HUGE HUG  for even trying and making that first 48. If that was your first try and you made 48 you did better than I did on my first attempt.

It took me 12 tries after getting sober to quit. I would string together a day or two... may be a month.

When I first sobered up I was smoking about 2 -3 + packs a day, smoking camel non filters, and rolling bugeler to cut costs.

By the time my 12th try came around I had about 3 years sober, had managed to cut back to about 1/2 a pack a day and had taken an old timers suggestion of applying the steps to it.

There were many times I wanted to pick up again... every now and then I still get a nibble of an urge, especially when I am really stressed, but with the help of my HP, the steps and a few other tricks I picked up I have not smoked since May of '93.

In many ways it was harder than quitting drinking or drugging but it was worth it.

Slow down, don't beat up on yourself (that's your sponsor's job anyway ) and give it another try soon. Try the steps. I think I posted something in this part of the forum on my process of quiting, check it out.

BTW do not forget that just staying clean and sober is a major accomplishment in itself and each time I come here and see you are still going and growing is a another smile for me.

U Kid!

(((((Kimba)))))

That was a good start -- now dust yourself off, and try again.

I had a doctor once tell me that nicotine is more addictive than heroin.  He quit smoking by using the gum (Nicorette), but then became addicted to the gum!

Do ask your dr. about any "helpers" that you could use.  My hubby tried Chantix (the new miracle pill that's supposed to take away the pleasure of smoking), and found it caused very restless sleep for him, but other people swear by it.  There are bunches of other things out there, so check with your dr. and see what he recommends.

LOVE YA!!!!!

I had tried quitting quite a few times and did have a quit from 2002-2003 and started smoking again. I quit on the patch back then and did it again in September of 2005 and have been smoke free since. It was hard but so worth it. I lost two parents to lung cancer and although I was told my mom's was not due to smoking, I still plan on staying smoke free. Life is too precious not to. Good luck with your quit on and congrats to all who have quit.

It really is very baffling till you understand the link between emotion and how cigs pacify us......I have 29 years c&s and would encourage anyone challenged by smoking to go see www.smokestopnow.com the only thing that realy makes sense and actually works.they even guarantee it...says a lot
