I got this in my email today and it really hit home. Thought I would share it with all of you lovelies. :o).  This is just another perfect example of what a liar alcohol is and how we lie to ourselves for the sake of the drink.

We Drank For...

We drank for happiness and became unhappy.

We drank for joy and became miserable.

We drank to be outgoing and became self-centered.

We drank for sociability and became argumentative.

We drank for sophistication and became crude and obnoxious.

We drank for friendship and made enemies.

We drank for sleep and awakened without rest.

We drank for strength and felt weak.

We drank for sex drive and lost our potency.

We drank for relaxation and got the shakes.

We drank for confidence and became doubtful.

We drank for warmth and lost our cool.

We drank for coolness and lost our warmth.

We drank for freedom and became slaves.

We drank for power and were powerless.

We drank to soften sorrow and wallowed in self-pity.

We drank medicinally and acquired health problems.

We drank because the job called for it and lost the job.

We drank to make conversation and slurred our words.

We drank to feel heavenly and knew hell.

We drank to forget and were haunted.

We drank to erase problems and saw them multiply.

We drank to cope with life and invited death.

Thanks Chelle... that is so true.

I would add one more to the list if it is ok.

I drank because I wanted to and the heck with the consequences.

It's a good day to be sober

Chelle, that was amazing!

Today's been a really boring Saturday afternoon, and I really needed something like this to put me in my place lest I forget.

Thanks a lot!

I drank to plug up the holes in my personality...you could call it fear or defects of character...I had actual short-comings and people could see them. At first alcohol covered these nicely "at once" I could be rid of them...It didn't last though, I could not escape my short-comings. I was miserable drunk or sober and could not stop by my own will power. I needed AA. God removed my obsession. I have been sober 14 years and 9 months....But my short-comings remain.  Short answer...I need to continue to go to meeting.

I drank because I knew another way but had lost sight of it. I needed more and had no way to get more to stop the pain. I was damaged and hurt. The booze made that better for a half of a second, if even that long. When I drank I was never free from self, the hollow and toxic self. That monster only grew to a collosal size. The basket of crazy was gone with the first drink and again arrived with the first morning blink. No more of the padding the pain with booze, AA has allowed me to deal with with all those issues with out using liquid crazy away. I am now sober for 2 years and ten months. One day at a time is the only way I got that far. I need contact with those like me, I need contct with my HP, and I must have the daily reprieve from alcohol, a gift given to me from and by Alcoholics Anonymous.Peace

Wow. Many lines in the post relate to me and what I'm dealing with. What a blessing. Actually it's quite scary how closly they relate.

Ouch..that poem is so true..and Rob, I can relate.  I drank also to plug the holes in my personality...my insecurity...the deep crevis I felt in my heart, and soul.  To not feel alone, to tolerate my mother, husband, myself......

Congrats on your 14+ years of sobriety, and thank you Chelle, Rob, and everyone..

Been sober for 7 days now, and a lot easier knowing I'm not alone

Thanks again,

Ana

Wow...that really hit home. This is day one for me. I drink to make life less painful (and guess what - it is more painful after drinking) and out of boredom. Can anyone tell me where I go on the web to start the 12 steps?
