Alcoholics Anonymous

If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through . . .

1. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.

2. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.

3. We will comprehend the word serenity.

4. We will know peace.

5. No matter how far down the scale he have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.

6. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.

7. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.

8. Self-seeking will slip away.

9. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.

10. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.

11. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.

12. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.

Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fullfilled among us - sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.

As soon as I acted on that gut wrenching bottom I had and admitted I was powerless over alcohol and that my life was unmanageable...and then acted on that fact... the first promise came true for me.

There is a great book out called "Gifts of Sobriety" that matches each promise to a step. There is no coincidence that there are 12 Steps and 12 Promises!  The book is a great , easy read great for newcomer and oldtimer alike.

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud
was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. ~~~Anais Nin

It's important to remember that the '12 Promises' are a side benefit of the big promise... you DO NOT have to drink today.

The '12 promises' are from the bit in the book about step 9. I've heard lots of folks who say 'the program doesn't work for me' because they can't see how the promises are coming true in their life or they're not willing to do the step work to make them come true.

If you're sober today... the rest is all gravy.
